Family business award for Outstanding Contribution presented in person

Dr John Anderson of Strathclyde Business School was delighted to present Afzal and Akmal Khushi of Trespass with The Herald Scotland Scottish Family Business of the Year Outstanding Contribution Award 2024, sponsored once again by Strathclyde Business School in December.

The brothers were both overseas on the night of the awards but John travelled to Tresspass HQ in Glasgow at Kinning Park to hand over the award in person.

On the night of the awards, John told the audience the Trespass story:

"Founded in 1938 in the heart of Glasgow, with 12 machinists working in a 1200 square foot warehouse providing uniforms and other items of clothing to large organisations including the local police, this company has grown substantially by finding its core purpose, building a highly talented team of creative individuals who constantly push the boundaries of innovation and by executing brilliantly under the leadership of the second generation family members.

“Today the business has around 1,800 employees; annual sales of over £120m; operating with over 300 stores worldwide; a network of wholesale clients in 60 countries and a thriving ecommerce platform.

“This company has an absolute commitment to its people, works closely with all stakeholders, and is deeply aware of its environmental responsibilities, remaining steadfast in enhancing the sustainability of its operations globally.

“This includes the continuous evolution of its product offering - including a range crafted from recycled materials - active engagement with its supply chain to ensure responsible sourcing practices and driving its decarbonisation in the UK.

“At its core is the company’s enduring purpose – being passionate about creating a brand where adventure comes first and believing no matter where you are in the world or what age you are, you should always be able to embrace the great outdoors."

“This is another great example of the important role that family businesses play in creating prosperity and employment in our communities. They are the real wealth creators in Scotland and deserve more recognition.

Strathclyde Business School was delighted to see this prestigious award go to the Khushi brothers, Afzal and Akmal, particularly so as Afzal is a Strathclyde alumnus.
