Project

The fellowship programme is structured around each participant identifying, designing and progressing a substantive governance project within their own organisation or system. This will not be a simulated exercise or case study — it is a live workstream that the participant owns and is accountable for throughout the duration of the programme. Projects are initiated at the point of enrolment, meaning that learning from the modules is applied in real time: concepts, frameworks and discussions encountered across programme modules are tested and embedded directly within the participant's own governance context as the programme unfolds.

A condition of participation in the fellowship is that each project carries formal organisational endorsement, sought at Board level or, at a minimum, senior executive level. This ensures that the participant has the mandate and institutional support necessary to progress meaningful change, and that the work sits within — rather than alongside — the governance structures of their organisation. It also signals to the organisation that the fellowship is not simply a professional development exercise for the individual, but an active contribution to the organisation's own quality governance development.

Throughout the programme, participants engage in structured project check-ins, alongside their learning modules, thus allowing them to draw on guidance from the programme and the perspectives of a peer cohort drawn from across public health, education, governance and related fields. This cross-sector peer engagement is a deliberate feature of the fellowship: governance challenges — whether in a private system, academic institution or a public body — frequently benefit from being examined through lenses that sit outside the immediate professional environment.

At the conclusion of the programme, participants present their project and produce a formal project report. The programme does not require that every project be fully complete at this point, recognising that substantive governance change often operates across longer institutional timeframes. What is expected is that participants have met the milestones and deliverables agreed at the outset, and can demonstrate clear progress and impact to date. The project report therefore serves both as a professional record for the participant and as a practical governance document of value to their organisation.
