Strathclyde Dean scoops top honours at Institute of Director Scottish Awards

Professor David Hillier, Executive Dean at Strathclyde Business School and Associate Principal, has been recognised at a prestigious awards ceremony in Glasgow's city centre.

Taking home Public Sector Director of the Year at the Institute of Director (IoD) Awards, Professor Hillier was among 15 top executives honoured for being the best in business across the country.

Responsible for managing resources to provide teaching, learning, and to drive research at Strathclyde Business School, Professor Hillier has played an instrumental role helping build on the School's reputation, which saw it crowned Top Business School in the UK, according to 2016's Times Higher Education Awards.

Commenting on Professor Hillier's award, the IoD judging panel said:

"David demonstrated strong and visible leadership. He literally practices what he preaches: with over 30 peer-reviewed papers on Corporate Governance, David has put in place a regime to help drive governance changes."

As a winner, Professor Hillier will be considered for the UK Director of the Year Awards, which take place in London, in September.

Created to reflect the diversity of business life in Scotland, the IoD awards recognise big business, SMEs, charities and the public sector, and applaud those individuals whose creativity, leadership or innovative business practices have led to success for their organisation and the communities they serve.

Commenting, Professor Hillier said: "It's a great honour to be recognised at this year's prestigious IoD Awards. We are so lucky to have such a strong, innovative and supportive team throughout Strathclyde Business School and the University. Without everyone working together, from our researchers, lecturers, and professional services to our industry, government and community partners, we wouldn't be where we are today - recognised as the UK Business School of the Year and a socially enlightened international institution for research and innovation."

Other winners on the evening included Douglas Whyte, CEO of Hydro Group; Derek Robertson of Keep Scotland Beautiful and Theresa Shearer, CEO of Enable Scotland.

Speaking on the strength of the Scottish business sector, Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Jobs and Fair Work, Keith Brown MSP, said: "The Scottish Government is committed to supporting sustainable business growth, and fostering a fairer and more prosperous Scotland. The Institute of Director's Scottish Awards provides an annual opportunity to showcase the innovation and excellence of Scottish companies that underpins growth in our economy and which I see regularly as I visit companies across Scotland. It is only right that we continue to celebrate their achievements and I congratulate all those nominated tonight."
