By Cherry Lai - Posted on 14 September 2023

Cherry Lai did the MSc in Marketing and recommends balancing academic work with an active social life and retaining an open mind for future career paths.

The decision to pursue MSc Marketing was rooted in my exposure to marketing-related courses during my undergraduate years. Recognising the dynamic nature of the field and its substantial impact on business success, I wanted to delve deeper into its intricacies. The programme's comprehensive curriculum, coupled with the University of Strathclyde's reputation in the realm of business education, cemented my choice to further specialise in marketing.

The MSc Marketing course at Strathclyde Business School aligns impeccably with my long-term aspirations and career trajectory. As I look to a future in marketing leadership roles, the course's comprehensive curriculum has equipped me with a profound understanding of both foundational and cutting-edge marketing strategies.

The emphasis on practical case studies bridges the theoretical gap and has readied me to tackle real-world challenges. This approach ensures that the concepts I learn are not just theoretical constructs, but tools I can readily employ when navigating the intricate landscape of marketing projects.

Furthermore, the collaborative group assignments, such as the "Marketing Works" project, simulate industry scenarios, allowing me to apply my skills to real campaigns. This experiential learning has bolstered my confidence in translating classroom knowledge into impactful marketing strategies.

Looking ahead, I am committed to utilising the knowledge gained in the programme to secure a position where I can drive innovative marketing initiatives and contribute to an organisation's growth. I am eager to embark on a journey that involves crafting effective marketing campaigns, analysing consumer behaviors, and adapting to the ever-evolving digital landscape. Ultimately, I see myself evolving from a student of marketing to a marketing strategist, bringing creativity, data-driven insights, and strategic thinking to the forefront of my career.

In the immediate future, I aim to secure an internship or entry-level position that aligns with my career aspirations. By gaining hands-on experience and honing my skills in a professional setting, I aim to further refine my abilities and contribute effectively to marketing initiatives. This step will not only bridge the gap between academic learning and practical implementation but also set the stage for my long-term professional growth within the dynamic field of marketing.

The curriculum emphasises a balanced integration of case studies and theoretical principles, bridging the gap between academic concepts and real-world application. This approach significantly minimizes the transition challenges that students might face when entering the professional realm of marketing projects.

The course not only delves into marketing essentials and contemporary strategies but also harnesses Strathclyde's pedagogical strengths, fostering an environment where theoretical concepts seamlessly blend with real-world scenarios. The guidance of our tutors nurtures critical thinking and collaborative learning, culminating in an enriching educational experience.

Strathclyde Business School has a modern and inviting learning atmosphere within its contemporary architectural setting. The well-lit classrooms and intelligently designed spaces, including collaborative discussion areas, contribute to an environment conducive to effective learning and group interactions.

Being a student at Strathclyde and residing in Glasgow has been a truly enriching experience. Strathclyde University's campus is strategically located in the heart of the city, providing students with easy access to a multitude of opportunities both within and beyond the campus grounds.

Glasgow, as a city, offers a dynamic and diverse atmosphere. In addition to the academic environment, students are surrounded by charming coastal towns and benefit from exceptionally convenient transportation options. Exploring historically rich Edinburgh is also a straightforward option.

The university's library boasts an extensive collection of books available for borrowing and study, further enhancing the academic journey. Meanwhile, the Student Union organises a wide array of activities that cater to various interests and cultures, serving as both a source of entertainment and valuable support for students.

In this vibrant urban setting, Strathclyde stands as a hub for education and growth, providing students with access to a global community. Embracing cross-cultural interactions becomes second nature, and the city's rich cultural heritage contributes to an all-encompassing personal and intellectual development. This fusion of academic excellence and the lively spirit of Glasgow forms the cornerstone of a well-rounded and rewarding student experience.

For any prospective student, I would offer advice that revolves around two crucial aspects: time management and maintaining a healthy balance between academic commitments and personal life.

Firstly, in terms of time management, it's essential to create a well-structured schedule that allocates dedicated time for classes, study sessions, assignments, and projects. Prioritise tasks based on deadlines and importance, and consider using tools such as calendars or task management apps to stay organised.

Secondly, while the academic side of life is a significant focus, don't underestimate the importance of maintaining a balanced lifestyle. Engaging actively in classes and seeking guidance from professors is vital, but remember to also allocate time for extracurricular activities, hobbies, and social interactions. These aspects contribute to holistic growth and prevent burnout.

Furthermore, networking and building relationships with your peers should be an integral part of your student experience. These connections can provide diverse perspectives, potential collaborations, and a strong support system.

Lastly, as industries and career paths continue to evolve, adaptability becomes crucial. Stay curious and open to exploring different avenues within your chosen field. Embrace change and seek opportunities for continuous learning, as this will enhance your skill set and keep you well-prepared for the dynamic professional landscape.
