MBM programme leads to dream graduate role

By Lewis O'Neill - Posted on 15 May 2024

Lewis O’Neill chose the MSc Business and Management (MBM) programme with the aim of pursing a career in project management – here, he talks about the programme and how he’s now achieved his dream career

Before the MBM I had completed my undergraduate degree in Politics, International Relations and History at Strathclyde achieving a 2:1.

However, in the fourth year of my undergrad, I was unsure what I wanted to do after university. I began to look at the Masters courses Strathclyde offered and was immediately drawn to one of the many courses offered by the Business School. I landed on the MBM as I felt it best suited my skills and would properly set me up for a successful career in Project Management which is what I had decided was what I wanted to do. As well as being an alumnus from Strathclyde University, the triple accreditation and reputation of the Business School made the decision easy for me,

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time on the course and was pleasantly surprised by the variety of classes taught throughout the course. The quick pace and change of classes have kept me engaged throughout the duration of the course. The mixture of assignments such as group work, essays and presentations has allowed me to develop a multitude of skills which have adequately prepared me for a career in industry.

The business simulation class was a particular favourite of mine as it allowed us to put our theoretical learning into practice. This class was an exciting new challenge and was just one of the ways in which the lecturers kept us engaged with our learning and own personal development. The lecturers on this course are exceptionally helpful and incredibly knowledgeable within their specific field, offering support and encouragement throughout the programme.

The Managing People in Organisations class featured guest speakers from the NHS and it was very interesting to hear from people who have real world experience in this specific field. Once again, this gave me a fresh perspective on the issues we had learned in class and allowed the theoretical approaches to be linked with real world issues.

During my time on the MBM I was fortunate enough to secure a position on Turner and Townsend’s Graduate Programme as a Project Manager, starting in September 2024. I believe the skills and experiences I acquired on the MBM set me up well for this role and allowed me to perform to the best of my ability throughout the recruitment process.
