PhD: an opportunity for change

By Shayesteh Moghadas - Posted on 29 May 2024

Shayesteh Moghadas, a doctoral researcher in the Marketing department, swapped full time work in Malaysia for research studies in Scotland and is embracing this opportunity for change.

As a third-year PhD student in the Marketing department at the University of Strathclyde Business School, I embarked on my research journey in February 2022. My background spans decades in the industry, particularly in hospitality and tourism.

Originally from Iran, I pursued my studies in Malaysia, where I spent 16 years as an expat, leading a national project for the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit the industry hard, I felt compelled to focus on sustainability within the hotel sector.

The allure of Strathclyde had been planted by my master supervisor and former CEO. Despite receiving offers and scholarships from various UK universities, Strathclyde felt like home. It was a monumental decision to leave my established career and tropical lifestyle to start afresh in Europe, navigating significant cultural and climatic changes. However, driven by my goals and responsibility to the next generation, I have embraced the opportunity for change.

I am grateful for the resources and support provided by the university. While the PhD journey has been challenging, my supervisors have been invaluable mentors, guiding me through tough times. I've also actively engaged in university life, participating in various associations and serving as the official representative of PhD students within the school and contributing to the community.

The unwavering support from my supervisors, academic peers, and administrative staff has been a beacon of strength, especially during hard times. Their encouragement has been pivotal in sustaining my commitment to my studies.

One of the highlights of my time here was very recently when I had the honour of presenting my research findings at an engagement event hosted by Strathclyde on May 8 as part of Engage with Strathclyde, one of the University’s key programmes for outreach and engagement events. It was heartening to have 89 participants, both online and on campus, take part in the event, including hoteliers and academics from the UK, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. The event featured insightful keynote speakers from industry and academia, sharing their experiences and insights into the evolving landscape.

Today, as I delve into the analysis phase of my study, I see the tangible impact of my research on the industry, aligning with my vision. This journey wouldn't have been possible without making the right choice in joining Strathclyde. I am proud to being a member of Strathclyde family, grateful for the opportunities and support that have shaped my academic and personal growth.
