Business and Law join up for business challenge

Dr Lorna Gillies looks at the opportunities in studying the MSc in International Management and Law, a degree which brings together Strathclyde Business School and Strathclyde Law School.

Now is a significant time of change, challenge and opportunity for international business and trade. 

International business and regulators are increasingly required to respond to global challenges brought about by changed political priorities such as Brexit, new international trade arrangements via bilateral and multilateral treaties and the global influence of newer, emerging markets such as India, Mexico, Malaysia and Poland. 

The international regulation of businesses and the business environment is of increasing significance to international trade and global legal regulation and practice. Global and regional regulators at the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), the World Trade Organisation (WTO), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the European Union (EU), and the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) must provide effective global governance for international businesses to flourish. 

The opportunity for postgraduate study of international management and law has never been more timely, relevant and valuable. 

In response, a joint initiative of Strathclyde Business School and Strathclyde Law School offers a new Masters degree (MSc) in International Management and Law. 

This Masters course is specifically designed for those who wish to develop and combine their knowledge of International Business with the study of Law at an advanced level. It forms part of a new pathway within the existing MSc programme of the Masters in International Management run by the award winning, triple accredited Strathclyde Business School. 

The course includes compulsory business classes such as Professional Management Practice, Managing Across Cultures and Global Business Environment. Strathclyde Law School provides two compulsory law classes; The Law of International Business and Comparative Law of Obligations. 

The Law of International Business is an ideal class for those who wish to complement their knowledge of international management practice with the study of law. It seeks to provide a coherent understanding of the historical development, principles, politics and law of regulating international business. It considers the foundations of the history, theory and regulatory environment of international business from a management and law perspective. Topics considered include the history and theory of the multinational enterprise, political environment and regulation, legal forms of multinational enterprise, regulation at national and regional level, corporate governance and failure and dispute resolution. It combines elements of company law and corporate regulation through hard and soft law mechanisms on a global and regional scale. The course also provides a wide range of management and law elective classes, relevant to today’s rapidly developing international trade environment such as strategic financial management, foundations of risk, world trade law, international environmental law, arbitration law and e-commerce. 

There is also the option to study abroad in the ‘Managing in Europe’ class and a practically-orientated project in either international management or law. 

The MSc in International Management and Law enables graduates to work in all organisations where a combined knowledge of International Management and Law is required. These organisations include consultancies, corporations, legal institutions, international governmental organisations such as the UN and European Commission, development agencies, policy-makers and senior administrators in government ministries, including those in developing countries.

Dr Lorna Gillies is a Lecturer in Commercial Law, prior to which she was a Senior Lecturer in Law at both the Universities of Leicester and Essex. She has taught at the University of Strathclyde to full time and part time LLB, LLM and Diploma in Legal Practice Students. Lorna has been a Fellow of the HEA since 2007 and a Full Member of the ILTHE between 2003-2007.
