By Gaurav Shinglot - Posted on 31 July 2024Gaurav Shinglot swapped his role as a consultant in the financial services in India for the MSc Sustainable Finance programme in Scotland to pursue his desire to make meaningful impact in the business world. Here, he shares his thoughts on the programme.
I am a qualified Chartered Accountant from India with a background in working as a consultant in financial services risk advisory. My journey to the MSc Sustainable Finance programme at the University of Strathclyde Business School was driven by a growing passion for sustainability and a desire to make a meaningful impact in the financial world.
During my time at Grant Thornton LLP – one of the world's leading professional services firms - I had the opportunity to lead ESG audits and sustainability report assurance projects for multiple high-quality clients worldwide. These experiences opened my eyes to the potential of sustainable finance and its importance in shaping a greener future. Recognizing the need for specialised knowledge in this emerging field, I made the bold decision to leave my high-paying consulting job and pursue further education.
The University of Strathclyde stood out as the clear choice for my master's degree. As one of the few institutions offering a dedicated programme in Sustainable Finance, the school’s triple accreditation and Strathclyde's stellar reputation made it an easy decision. Being part of the inaugural cohort for the 2023-24 academic year was an added bonus, offering a unique opportunity to shape the programme's future.
The MSc Sustainable Finance programme at Strathclyde has exceeded my expectations. The curriculum strikes an excellent balance between foundational knowledge and practical application. The assignments and research projects have been particularly valuable, especially those focused on ESG analysis of companies. As someone with a Chartered qualification and a strong background in finance and accounting, I appreciated the programme's focus on these practical exercises which honed my analytical skills and deepened my understanding of how sustainability factors into corporate performance and investment decisions.
One of the programme's strengths is its emphasis on real-world application. Through case studies, workshops, and in-class presentations, we've been able to engage with complex issues and develop practical solutions. The diverse cohort, comprising students from various countries, has enriched our discussions and broadened our perspectives on global sustainability challenges.
The second semester's "Applications of Sustainable Finance" module was particularly impactful. Guest lectures from industry executives provided invaluable insights into how financial institutions are integrating ESG considerations into their business practices and investment decisions. These sessions bridged the gap between theory and practice, preparing us for the realities of the sustainable finance landscape.
Studying in Glasgow has been an incredible experience. The city's vibrant student community, accessible public transportation, and proximity to major tourist destinations have made my time here both enjoyable and enriching.
For those considering the MSc Sustainable Finance programme at Strathclyde, I wholeheartedly recommend it. The programme offers a unique blend of academic rigor and practical application in a rapidly evolving field. It has equipped me with the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue my goal of working as a consultant or ESG investment analyst in sustainable finance.
The University of Strathclyde has not only provided me with a world-class education but has also reinforced my commitment to contributing to a more sustainable future. This programme is ideal for those who want to be at the forefront of the sustainable finance revolution and make a lasting impact on the world of business and beyond.
