Mastering a clearer career path
By Jack Walker - Posted on 28 May 2025Jack Walker is doing the MSc Business and Management programme which has provided him with a broad introduction to business functions, allowing him to pick out a clearer career path to a new job.
Prior to joining the MSc Business and Management (MBM) programme, I was working two jobs and pursuing my personal training qualifications whilst immersed in the sport and leisure industry. After completing my undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice, I found myself without a clear career path that truly interested me. I spent a year figuring things out, working as a Martial Arts instructor and behind the bar at a local pub. Eventually, I realised I wanted more than a lifelong career as an instructor. Opening my own martial arts club seemed like the next logical step, but before committing to such a venture, I wanted to gain real world experience. Returning to university felt like the ideal opportunity to refocus and earn a reputable degree in the process.
The MBM programme has provided a broad introduction to essential business functions, allowing me to identify what I enjoy and where I excel. Despite having no prior background in finance and accounting, I've performed well in these modules. The most rewarding aspects, however, have been the real life client projects and presentation opportunities, both of which I thrive in. Coming from a completely different field, I was surprised at how engaging and fast paced the teaching was, with its hands on approach complementing my learning style.
Beyond core teaching, I sought my own industry experience, securing a role with a local media agency specialising in marketing, SEO, and strategy. Combining this with my time working in small businesses, I gained fresh insight into business operations and how they could be optimised for efficiency. Balancing two part time jobs alongside my studies has been demanding, especially since my martial arts tuition runs midweek. However, the sacrifice has been worthwhile, as it has strengthened my ability to manage my time and prioritise effectively whilst maintaining Distinction level grades throughout my studies.
The Careers Service has been an invaluable resource, refining my CV and advising on how best to tailor applications to my target roles. Their guidance on key trigger words and industry specific phrasing has been particularly useful in standing out when applying.
For my project, I'm working in a close-knit team with peers who share a similar approach to collaboration. Strathclyde Business School fosters teamwork throughout its modules, allowing us to work transparently and efficiently. Our project focuses on marketing within the pharmaceutical industry, analysing potential changes in UK regulations due to Brexit and comparing consumer perspectives across countries like Sri Lanka, Australia, the USA, and France.
I would absolutely recommend the MBM programme to anyone with ambition in business, finance, or core business operations who lacks an academic background in these areas. The experience has been invaluable for shaping my mindset and future career prospects, providing academic, personal, and professional growth. For those considering it, I encourage you to take the leap, you won't regret it - I'm delighted to say I've been offered a BNP Paribas Traineeship in its Change and Transformation team and have just accepted the position!
