Investing in your career: the MSc Investment and Finance

While Deepak Lamichhane's career had been in the investment and capital markets sector in Nepal, he opted to travel to Scotland to add to his experience with Strathclyde's MSc Investment and Finance.
Before joining the MSc Investment and Finance programme at Strathclyde Business School, I was working in the investment and capital markets sector in Nepal. I had gained hands-on experience through roles in investment banking, portfolio management and equity research. While this professional background helped me understand financial markets in practice, I wanted to strengthen my theoretical foundation, develop advanced analytical skills, and gain international expose. This motivated me to pursue the MSc Investment and Finance at Strathclyde.
Overall, my experience on the programme has been extremely positive. The course is academically rigorous while remaining highly relevant to real-world financial markets. The teaching approach encourages critical thinking, application-based learning, and independent analysis. Faculty members are supportive and approachable, creating a challenging yet engaging learning environment.
In Semester 1, the core modules provided a strong foundation in finance. Principles of Finance introduced financial decision-making from a corporate finance perspective, focusing on value maximisation, investment appraisal, and the risk-return relationship in capital markets. Accounting and Financial Analysis strengthened my ability to prepare, interpret, and analyse financial statements using IFRS, which is essential for evaluating company performance. Quantitative Methods for Finance introduced statistical and econometric techniques commonly used in finance, significantly improving my confidence in data analysis. International Financial Markets and Banking offered a global perspective on financial systems, institutions, and regulation, with particular emphasis on banking and international markets.
Beyond the academic, experiential learning has been one of the biggest highlights of the programme. I participated in a one-week AmplifyME session focused on investment banking, which provided valuable insight into industry practices and professional expectations. I also completed Bloomberg Terminal training and certification through the university, gaining hands-on experience with tools widely used in investment banking, asset management and financial research.
The programme offers excellent exposure to industry professionals through guest speaker events. I attended sessions delivered by senior leaders including Paul Taylor, Head of International Global Commercial Banking at Bank of America, who spoke about emerging trends, disruptive technologies, and the future of work in global banking. I also attended Surviving and Thriving: Navigating Careers in Global Finance, delivered by Bryan Murphy, Global Head of Client Experience and Financial Institutions Client Success Management, at Citi, who shared lessons from over 25 years in global finance.
Another unique aspect of studying at Strathclyde has been exposure to Glasgow’s international financial district. Through the business school’s strong industry reputation I attended sessions and events involving Barclays, JPMorgan Chase, and Morgan Stanley, gaining valuable insight into investment banking and global financial careers.
I also actively engaged in student life by becoming a member of the golf club, lawn tennis activities, and the FinTech Society, where regular events and networking opportunities allowed me to connect with industry experts and like-minded students. I attended employability events such as the Scottish Graduate Fair 2025, which provided direct access to employers and recruiters across the UK.
Beyond this, I am proud to have been selected as a UniBuddy School Ambassador and also given the opportunity to become a business school ambassador. Representing Strathclyde and sharing my experience with prospective students has been extremely rewarding.
Looking back, I am genuinely happy and grateful for my decision to join Strathclyde Business School and the MSc Investment and Finance programme. The combination of academic excellence, industry exposure, supportive culture, and vibrant student life has been both enriching and transformative, and I feel confident and well prepared for a future career in global finance.
