Getting down to business

By Susan Hart - Posted on 15 January 2013

Writing at the start of 2013 it is difficult to predict what the New Year will have in store for the business world. With the prospect of an unprecedented triple-dip recession still a possibility the economy is facing considerable challenges, and it can be argued that the role of business education has never been more important. That’s something we understand at Strathclyde Business School (SBS) and we have been experiencing increased demand for the range of services we offer. Now, more than ever, there is a need for strong management with a clear vision for where businesses need to go to remain competitive. For many, part of that journey will be through the adoption of education, particularly for emerging leaders.

Our new blog will provide a platform for SBS experts, students and alumni, as well as figures from the business community to share their experience and illuminate debate on business issues on the national and international stage.

For the last 65 years, SBS has been educating some of the brightest business minds and our experience in delivering business education, leaves us in a great position to share our knowledge. Our professors, lecturers and staff are recognised as leaders in their fields while our alumni make up the ranks of some the largest companies in the world. Our staff have strong opinions on what’s going on in the business world and they are keen to share them with you.

One of our major growth areas is in executive education. We’re seeing more evidence of companies looking to invest in existing talent through education programmes, specifically for leadership skills, which help businesses rise above challenging conditions to stay competitive. We are already working with major companies including Babcock and Standard Life and the feedback we’re getting suggests candidates are using their learning to change the way their companies work as they look to adapt and thrive.

The seeds of all good business ideas come from relevant research and it’s an area SBS is well respected for. We work across a huge range of subjects ranging from start-up companies to international markets. We intend to use this blog to showcase both our talent and expertise and we’ll be sharing our insight with the business community in the weeks ahead.

The kind of things you can expect to see in the coming weeks include:

  • Our analysis of the issues facing business which will help to put emerging themes into a wider context
  • the role of business education in a global context which will help to explain how candidates fit into the fast-changing international economy
  • continued focus on economics and strategy to identify emerging trends and new theories
  • our reaction to breaking news stories affecting our sector to position SBS as one of the UKs authorities on business education
  • the experience of our students to share the knowledge of those going through our education programmes
  • advice to potential students to encourage new people to sign-up to the courses most relevant to their own ambitions

The blog will be updated twice a week and we want to know what you think. We’ll have a comments section on all our posts as we kick-start discussions on the main issues facing our sector. Similarly if you become a regular reader and have something you want to share, get in touch - you could find yourself featuring in one of our future blogs. We will welcome all feedback so please do let us know if you have something to say.
