Strathclyde students reach the top 10 of nationwide marketing competition

Two Strathclyde Business School students have got through to the final of The Pitch, a nationwide marketing competition designed to recognise and reward the marketing talent of the future.

The Pitch, run by The Chartered Institute of Marketing, is a competition for undergraduate students who are tasked with a real-life marketing challenge set by a leading global brand with allows the students the opportunity to apply their learning from their degrees.

Thomas Cooper and Adam Dickson are now the third team in three years from Strathclyde Business School to reach this part of the Challenge. Getting to this stage is testament to their hard work, dedication and teamwork. This year’s challenge was set by one of Europe’s leading food retailers, Lidl, and was focused on Lidl’s aim to reduce plastic packaging by 20% by 2022 – the challenge asked, “How can we keep our customers informed of our commitment and progress in the lead up to 2022, whilst helping customers to reduce their plastic use?”

Thomas and Adam will pitch their idea in front of business professionals on February 28, and if they impress the panel they will be selected as one of the top three teams to attend CIM’s Marketing Excellence Awards 2020.

Thomas McAlinden, Department of Marketing, who supervised the team, said, “I am absolutely ecstatic that students from the University of Strathclyde Business School have managed to reach the final of the annual CIM competition The Pitch once again - and for the third year running - having already won the competition outright twice over the past two years. The CIM competition allows our students to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of marketing principles, applying theory learned in a real life context which cements the University of Strathclyde as truly the ‘place of useful learning’.

Adam and Thomas said, “We are delighted to have been selected as finalists for The Pitch 2020! It’s a fantastic opportunity and we highly recommend future students to take part. The competition has allowed us to work with the globally recognised supermarket, Lidl – helping them develop a marketing campaign surrounding their environmental pledge. It will be a great honour to represent Strathclyde and we hope to do the university proud!”

The winning team will receive £1,500, a ‘Marketers of the Future’ award at CIM’s Marketing Excellence Awards and complimentary CIM membership for each team member.
