Strathclyde Engage 2023

Engage with Strathclyde is the University’s flagship events programme which takes place annually during May and aims to stimulate engagement with business, industry, the public and third sectors, with the aim of enhancing and building our collaborative partnerships.

In 2023, Engage with Strathclyde will take place between May 2 and 12 and Strathclyde Business School has put together a series of nine events for the programme.

The events programme is designed to provide multiple opportunities for industry, the public and third sectors to find out more about the University’s world-leading research, innovation, and technologies, as well as how to benefit from our research, consultancy, CPD and collaborative knowledge exchange.

The events that Strathclyde Business School is delivering reflect some of the areas our staff are currently active in. We are delighted to welcome speakers from our industry partners alongside our SBS academic staff to deliver these events.

Kingsley Aikins, CEO of the Networking Institute, is delivering a networking masterclass ‘The Power of Networking’ on May 4 - this will be a fantastic way to learn some new networking techniques and access resources to support your networking journey.

Dr Eleni Tsougkou is leading ‘Beyond Borders: Plan a Successful International Business Journey’ on May 3 which is aimed at managers of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in the manufacturing sector who are looking to understand their businesses readiness to internationals and how to identify which potential international market to enter.

Strathclyde Business School has been supporting the Breaking Barriers programme since 2018 in partnership with Enable Scotland. This award-winning programme enables young Scots who have a learning disability and additional barriers to education and employment to attend Strathclyde Business School, achieve an accredited qualification and gain real work with some of Scotland’s high profile corporate employers. The ‘Breaking Barriers: A New Vision’ event on May 12 is open to past, present and future students and their families as well as organisations who might be interested in becoming an industry partner.

Sustainability is a topic that cuts across all industries, so it is not surprising that Strathclyde Business School academics are involved in delivering two events tackling sustainability topics.

Professor Iain Black’s event ‘Do you have a sustainability mindset?’ on May 4 is open to managers and project managers of organisations from any sector and looks at how organisations can examine the role of a sustainability mindset in taking successful, timely action on climate change and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Also on May 4, the aim of ‘The Circular Revolution’ is to gain insight into the existing network of stakeholders working towards a circular textiles economy within Glasgow, what the existing barriers are and what needs to change in order to achieve a circular economy. It would be ideal event to find out more about what support is available. Dr Matthew Alexander will be leading this event. The session will begin with a panel discussion between industry experts followed by a summary of existing academic research on the role stakeholders play in circular economies.

In partnership with HR Voluntary Sector Forum and the Coalition of Care and Support Providers in Scotland (CCPS) Professor Iain Cunningham’s event ‘Benchmarking Pay and Conditions in Voluntary Sector Social Services 2023’ on May 10 will look at the implications of the pay and conditions benchmarking survey for policy and practice.

Umida Niyazova, Director of the Uzbek Forum for Human Rights will be speaking at ‘What's next for human rights and labour activism in Uzbekistan?’ on May 3. This event is supported by the newly developed Strathclyde Cluster on Central Asia and Former Soviet States (SCAFSS). Umida will provide insights into the work of international civil society human rights monitors and the lived experiences of labour activists in Uzbekistan. This event aims to provide an update on the evolution of forced labour in Uzbekistan’s cotton sector and society.

‘Climate Finance Innovation’ on May 9 led by Professor Mark Cummins provides a unique opportunity for the FinTech and Space industries to network with one another - and the academic community - on cross-collaborative pathways to technology-led innovation in climate finance.

‘Diversity in entrepreneurship, science, and education’ on May 2 will be of interest to researchers, policy-makers and practitioners interested in finding out about new methods which have been developed by Dr Paul Lassalle and his colleagues to measure, assess, and analyse diversity in different fields.

There are more events from across all faculties available to be viewed on the Engage 2023 Calendar.
