Visiting lecturer Jillian Ney at TedX event

Dr Jillian Ney, visiting lecturer for Digital Marketing and Social Media at Strathclyde's Department of Marketing, presented at the recent TedX event at Glasgow University in March. As the UK's first doctor of social media, she argues that with social media we are not truly connected in the way the Facebook founders think that we are, and she challenges them to find a way to improve this.

The TEDx Program is designed to help communities, organisations and individuals to spark conversation and connection through local TED-like experiences.

Jillian joined the department of marketing in 2003 as an undergraduate student and continued her studies in 2008 as a doctoral researcher where she explored consumer behaviour and social media. She is now a visiting academic and lectures on digital marketing and social media for both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

In 2013 Jillian founded Disruptive Insight, a social intelligence consultancy that helps large organisations find and create shared value from social media. She also sits on several advisory boards for social technology and education brands and regularly publishes on social consumer behaviour and social media measurement in industry publications. Emma Reid, another alumna from SBS, also now works alongside Jillian at Disruptive Insight as a senior researcher.
